Understand the result

UTM values are case-sensitive. Existing non-UTM parameters and URL fragments are preserved; existing UTM parameters are replaced with the values here. Tags alone do not install analytics or record conversions. Do not include personal information in campaign URLs.

How to use the UTM Campaign URL Builder

  1. Paste the destination URL — the exact page you want people to land on, starting with https://.
  2. Fill in campaign source — where the traffic comes from, such as facebook, instagram, google, newsletter or whatsapp.
  3. Fill in campaign medium — the type of traffic, such as paid_social, cpc, email or referral.
  4. Fill in campaign name — a short name you will recognise later, such as winter_sale_2026.
  5. Optional: content and term. Use content to tell apart two ads or links in the same campaign (for example video_ad vs carousel_ad) and term for paid keywords.
  6. Press Generate and copy the finished link into your ad, post, bio or email.

What UTM parameters do

UTM parameters are small tags added to the end of a URL. When someone clicks the link, analytics tools such as Google Analytics read the tags and record exactly which campaign, platform and ad sent the visit. Without them, a lot of social, email and WhatsApp traffic ends up as “direct” or “referral”, and you cannot tell which promotion worked.

Example

Destination: https://example.com/perfumes/oud-royal
Source: instagram · Medium: paid_social · Campaign: eid_offer · Content: reel_1

Result: https://example.com/perfumes/oud-royal?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=paid_social&utm_campaign=eid_offer&utm_content=reel_1

Naming rules that keep your reports clean

  • Use lowercase only. UTM values are case-sensitive, so “Facebook” and “facebook” show up as two different sources.
  • Use underscores or hyphens instead of spaces.
  • Write your naming rules down and share them with anyone who creates links for your business.
  • Keep a simple log (a spreadsheet is fine) of every tagged link and what it was used for.

Where not to use UTM links

Do not add UTM tags to internal links between pages on your own website. Doing so starts a new session in some analytics setups and overwrites the original traffic source, which makes your data less accurate. Use UTMs only on links placed outside your site.

Frequently asked questions

Do UTM parameters affect SEO?

Not when used on external campaign links. Search engines usually treat them as the same page, especially when your site has a correct canonical tag.

Can I shorten a UTM link?

Yes. A link shortener keeps the tags intact and makes the link easier to share on social media or print on packaging.

Do Facebook and Google Ads need UTMs?

Google Ads can tag links automatically when auto-tagging is on and linked to Analytics. For Meta, TikTok, email and WhatsApp, add UTMs yourself.
