Email Marketing Basics for Online Stores

Email Marketing Basics for Online Stores

Email remains one of the most reliable channels for online stores. Unlike social media, where reach depends on algorithms, your email list is an audience you can contact directly. With a few well-planned emails, you can welcome new subscribers, recover lost sales and bring customers back for repeat purchases.

Build a permission-based list

Only email people who have agreed to hear from you. Buying lists damages your reputation with email providers and can break laws in many countries. Grow your list honestly:

Choose an email platform

Use a dedicated email marketing service that integrates with your store. Look for automation features, segmentation, good deliverability, templates and clear reporting. Most platforms are free or low-cost for small lists.

Set up essential automated flows

Automated emails are triggered by customer actions and work around the clock.

1. Welcome series

Send two or three emails after someone subscribes. Thank them, deliver any promised incentive, introduce your brand story and highlight best-selling products. Welcome emails typically receive some of the highest engagement of any email you send.

2. Abandoned cart

Remind shoppers who left items in their cart. A common sequence is one email after a few hours and another the next day. Show the items, answer common objections (delivery, returns, payment security) and include a clear link back to the cart.

3. Browse abandonment

If a subscriber viewed products but did not add them to the cart, a gentle reminder showing those products can bring them back.

4. Post-purchase

Thank the customer, set expectations about delivery, share care or usage tips and later ask for a review. Good post-purchase communication reduces support questions and builds loyalty.

5. Win-back

Reach out to customers who have not purchased in a while with new arrivals, a reminder of what they liked or a special offer.

Send regular campaigns

Beyond automation, send newsletters or campaigns for launches, seasonal events, sales and helpful content. Keep a consistent schedule, such as every week or every two weeks, so subscribers know what to expect.

Segment your audience

Not every subscriber wants the same email. Segment by behaviour and interests, for example new subscribers, first-time buyers, repeat customers, people interested in a specific category or customers in a particular region. Relevant emails earn more clicks and fewer unsubscribes.

Write emails people want to open

Protect deliverability

Authenticate your sending domain with SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, include a visible unsubscribe link, remove addresses that bounce and regularly clean out subscribers who never engage. These steps help your emails reach the inbox instead of the spam folder.

Track the right metrics

Open rates are less reliable than they used to be because of privacy features in email apps, so focus on clicks and sales.

Start with a welcome series and an abandoned cart flow, then add a regular newsletter. These basics alone can turn email into a consistent source of sales for your store.
