Understand the result

Use matching reporting periods and definitions. A zero denominator is shown as not available. Depending on tracking, multiple interactions or conversions may be counted for one person.

How to use the Ad Metrics Calculator

  1. Enter your ad spend for the period you are reviewing.
  2. Enter impressions, clicks and conversions from the same report and date range in Meta Ads Manager, Google Ads, TikTok Ads or any other platform.
  3. Press Calculate. The tool returns CPM, CPC, CTR and CPA in one place so you can compare campaigns quickly.

The four core formulas

  • CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions) = Spend ÷ Impressions × 1,000
  • CPC (cost per click) = Spend ÷ Clicks
  • CTR (click-through rate) = Clicks ÷ Impressions × 100
  • CPA (cost per acquisition) = Spend ÷ Conversions

Worked example

A Facebook campaign spends $300, gets 60,000 impressions, 900 clicks and 18 purchases.

  • CPM = 300 ÷ 60,000 × 1,000 = $5.00
  • CPC = 300 ÷ 900 = $0.33
  • CTR = 900 ÷ 60,000 × 100 = 1.5%
  • CPA = 300 ÷ 18 = $16.67

How to read the numbers together

Each metric points to a different part of the funnel:

  • High CPM usually means a competitive or very narrow audience, or a low-quality ranking for your ad. Try broader targeting or fresher creative.
  • Low CTR means people see the ad but do not care enough to click. The hook, image or offer needs work.
  • Good CTR but high CPA means people click but do not buy. Look at the landing page, price, shipping cost and trust signals instead of the ad.
  • Low CPC but no sales can mean you are attracting cheap but unqualified clicks. Check placements and audience.

Which metric matters most?

For a business, the metric closest to money matters most — usually CPA or ROAS. CPM, CPC and CTR are diagnostic: they explain why your CPA is high or low. Compare your CPA with the profit you make per order; if CPA is higher than that profit, the campaign is losing money even if the other metrics look healthy. Use the profit margin calculator to find your profit per order.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my platform show a different CTR?

Platforms report several click types, such as “link clicks” and “all clicks”. All clicks include likes, profile clicks and expanding the text. Use link clicks for a fair comparison with website traffic.

Does a lower CPM always mean a better campaign?

No. Cheap impressions in the wrong audience or placement rarely convert. Judge a campaign by CPA and ROAS first.
