How to Track Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp Traffic in GA4 with UTM Links
If you share your website on Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, Google Analytics 4 often lumps that traffic together or shows it as “Direct”. That makes it hard to know which platform actually brings customers. UTM links fix this. You add a few tags to the end of your URL, and GA4 then shows exactly where each visit came from. You can build them in seconds with our free UTM Campaign URL Builder.
Why social traffic goes missing
- In-app browsers. Instagram and Facebook open links inside their own apps, and the referrer is not always passed on.
- WhatsApp messages. Links opened from WhatsApp usually arrive with no referrer, so GA4 records them as Direct.
- One link, many places. The same link in your bio, a story and an ad looks identical in reports.
Ready-to-use UTM naming for each platform
Use lowercase and keep names the same every time. UTM values are case-sensitive, so “Instagram” and “instagram” show as two different sources.
| Where the link is shared | utm_source | utm_medium | utm_campaign example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram bio | social | bio_link | |
| Instagram story | social | eid_sale_story | |
| Facebook page post | social | eid_sale | |
| Facebook / Instagram paid ad | facebook or instagram | paid_social | eid_sale |
| WhatsApp broadcast or status | social | eid_sale_broadcast | |
| WhatsApp chat reply to a lead | referral | lead_followup |
Use utm_content to tell apart two versions in the same campaign, for example video_ad and image_ad.
How to build the link (step by step)
- Open the free UTM Builder.
- Paste your page address in Destination URL, for example
https://yourstore.com/eid-sale/. - Fill in Campaign source, Campaign medium and Campaign name from the table above.
- Add Content or Term only if you need to compare versions.
- Click Generate and copy your tagged link.
The result looks like this:
https://yourstore.com/eid-sale/?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=eid_sale_story
Tip: long links look messy in a bio or a WhatsApp message. You can shorten the tagged link with any link shortener. The UTM tags still work after the redirect.
Where to see the results in GA4
- Open Google Analytics 4 and go to Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition.
- Change the table’s main column to Session source / medium to see rows like
instagram / socialandwhatsapp / social. - Switch it to Session campaign to compare campaigns such as
eid_saleagainstbio_link. - Add Key events or Purchases to the view to see which source brings sales, not just visits.
New data can take up to 24–48 hours to appear in standard reports. To test a link right away, open it and check Realtime.
Rules to avoid broken data
- Never use UTM links on your own website. Internal links with UTM tags start a new session and overwrite the real source.
- Write down your naming. A simple shared sheet stops the team from mixing “fb”, “facebook” and “Facebook”.
- Use “paid_social” only for ads. GA4 sorts mediums like this into Paid Social, and “social” into Organic Social.
- Test every link before you post it, to make sure the page opens correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do UTM links affect SEO?
No, as long as you only use them on external links such as social posts, emails and ads, not inside your own site.
Can I add UTM tags to Facebook ads?
Yes. Paste your tagged link as the ad’s website URL, or add the tags in the ad’s URL parameters field.
Why do I still see WhatsApp visits as Direct?
Those visits came from links that had no UTM tags, for example a link someone copied and forwarded. Share tagged links wherever you can.
Is the UTM Builder free?
Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up, and runs in your browser.
