How to Calculate Cost per Lead (CPA) for Your Ad Campaigns
Clicks and likes are nice, but leads and sales pay the bills. Cost per lead tells you how much you spend to get one enquiry, sign-up or WhatsApp message from your ads. Once you know this number, you can tell whether a campaign is making money or quietly losing it. You can work it out instantly with our free Ad Metrics Calculator.

The cost per lead formula
Cost per lead (CPL) is a type of cost per acquisition (CPA). The “acquisition” is whatever you count as a result: a form fill, a call, a message or a sale.
If you spend 30,000 PKR and get 60 leads, your cost per lead is 500 PKR.
Worked example
A Karachi furniture shop runs a Facebook lead campaign for one week:
| Metric | Value | How it is calculated |
|---|---|---|
| Ad spend | 30,000 PKR | From Ads Manager |
| Impressions | 120,000 | From Ads Manager |
| Clicks | 1,800 | From Ads Manager |
| Leads | 60 | Forms or messages received |
| CPM | 250 PKR | 30,000 ÷ 120,000 × 1,000 |
| CPC | 16.67 PKR | 30,000 ÷ 1,800 |
| CTR | 1.5% | 1,800 ÷ 120,000 × 100 |
| Cost per lead (CPA) | 500 PKR | 30,000 ÷ 60 |
To get all four numbers at once, enter spend, impressions, clicks and conversions in the Ad Metrics Calculator. It supports USD, PKR, EUR, GBP and AED.
How much can you afford to pay per lead?
A cost per lead is only “good” or “bad” when you compare it with what a lead is worth to you. Work it out in two steps:
- Find your profit per sale. Sale price minus product cost, delivery and other costs. Say the shop makes 6,000 PKR profit on an average order.
- Find how many leads become customers. If 1 in 5 leads buys, your lead-to-sale rate is 20%.
6,000 × 20% = 1,200 PKR. Any cost per lead below 1,200 PKR is profitable. At 500 PKR, this campaign has room to scale.
How to lower your cost per lead
- Improve CTR first. A stronger image or hook gets more clicks for the same spend. Low CTR usually means the ad does not stop the scroll.
- Fix the landing page or form. If CPC is fine but CPL is high, the problem is after the click. Shorten the form, speed up the page, and make the offer clear.
- Narrow the audience. Paying for people who will never buy raises every metric. Use location, interests and lookalikes carefully.
- Follow up fast. Leads contacted within minutes convert far better, which raises the value of every lead.
- Track the real source. Tag your ad links with UTM codes using our UTM Builder so you know which ad brings buyers, not just form fills.
Reading the numbers together
| What you see | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| High CPM | Audience is small or competitive, or the ad quality is low |
| Low CTR | Creative or offer is not attractive enough |
| Good CTR, high CPL | Landing page, form or offer is losing people after the click |
| Low CPL, few sales | Leads are low quality; tighten targeting or qualify in the form |
