How Long Should a Product Description Be? Word Counts That Sell
Too short, and shoppers do not have enough information to buy. Too long, and they stop reading before the “Add to cart” button. For most online stores, a product description of 150–300 words hits the sweet spot. Simple, low-cost products need less; expensive or technical products need more. Recommended length by product type
| Product type | Suggested length | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Simple, low-price items (phone covers, socks) | 80–150 words | Shoppers decide quickly; key facts are enough |
| Fashion, beauty, perfume, home décor | 150–300 words | Buyers need feel, scent, fit or style described |
| Furniture, appliances, gadgets | 300–500 words | Size, materials, specs and care questions |
| High-ticket or technical products | 500+ words, with specs table | Buyers compare carefully and want proof |
These are guides, not rules. A description is the right length when it answers every question a buyer would ask before paying.
A simple structure that works
- Opening line (15–25 words). Say who it is for and the main benefit. Example: “A soft, breathable cotton kurta made for long summer days in Karachi heat.”
- Three to five benefit bullets. Turn features into reasons to buy: “Double-stitched seams – lasts wash after wash.”
- Details and specs. Size, material, weight, what is in the box, colour options.
- Care, delivery and returns. Short answers to the questions that stop people buying.
- A clear nudge. “Order today for delivery in 2–4 working days.”
Platform limits to know
- SEO meta description: about 140–160 characters before Google may cut it off. Preview it with our Meta Title & Description Preview tool.
- SEO title: about 50–60 characters.
- Marketplaces such as Amazon set their own limits on titles, bullet points and description length, which vary by category. Check the seller rules for your category before you write.

Tips for descriptions that sell
- Write for one buyer. Picture your typical customer and answer their questions in their words.
- Never copy the supplier’s text. Many stores use the same manufacturer description, and Google has little reason to rank yet another copy. Unique text helps your page get indexed and ranked.
- Use short sentences and paragraphs. Most shoppers read on a phone.
- Add your main keyword naturally in the first sentence and once more in the body. Do not stuff it.
- Cut filler words such as “very”, “really” and “high quality” unless you prove them with a detail.
